Windows is the most widely used computer operating system today. This is due to several factors, and one of them is the number of customization features has. For example, in it you can remove the letters that appear in your units. To learn how to customize this view, the topic will be explained in detail below.
In which versions of Windows can you hide the letter that appears on the drives?
The first thing to know about this is that the drives that are on a Windows computer, be it flash drives, hard drives or any other type drive need to be identified by the system. This is done through the letters that appear next to the unit name (for example C :).
However, although the system uses it to identify it, this is just a kind of manifestation that it has done so. For that reason, by hiding these letters absolutely nothing will happen. Knowing this, the second thing to know is that this can be hidden in any version of Windows from Windows 7.
To find out exactly how these letters can be hidden, here are three proven and efficient methods. Needless to say, some are more complex than others, but they all work perfectly.
How can you hide the letters that appear on Windows drives?
Before beginning to explain the methods, it is important to understand something: although this works in all versions of Windows from the seventh, in some the procedure may vary slightly; that’s why it is recommended to try all three options. This is mainly due to system-changing system default settings.
Knowing this, it must be said that there are three different ways to do this procedure: using commands on our keyboard, using the CMD or entering view options.
Using keyboard commands
The first method we can apply is to use the keyboard commands together with the disk manager drive. To do this we will have to press the Windows + R keys. After this you have to type diskmgmt.msc in the typing field and press enter; that will open the computer’s disk manager.
After this we will have to locate the disk drive we want to remove and right click on it. When performing this action a small menu will open with several options, and there we will locate the one that says “Change the letter of the unit and the paths”. This will open a small box where we will have to select the letter we want to delete.
When you select it, the only thing left is click “Delete”, then “Yes” to confirm the actions and finally close the entire disk manager. Upon entering the Windows Library again we can see that the letter of the drive in question has disappeared.
This is a fairly efficient method; however, it has the disadvantage that it does not do it automatically with all the drives on the computer, but will have to be done manually.
Do it from CMD
The second method is through the CMD (System symbol). To open it we have to press Windows + R, type “cmd” and press Enter. Now, in the case of Windows 10 you can open by pressing Windows + X and then click on “Command Symbol (Admin)”, that will open the CMD window, where we will have to type a specific command.
The command in question will start with “diskpart” and then we do Enter. Then type “list volume” and press Enter again. We will type in the new command line “Select volume…” and we will write the one that we want to modify and press enter.
After doing this ewrite “remove letter…” y write down exactly the letter that is written on the unit in question before making enter. By doing this we can close the CMD, return to the Windows library, and we will see that the letter has been removed once again. Of course, like the previous method, this one is individual and manual. The following is a simpler one.
Entering the view options
A third option we can apply to remove letters from Windows drives is to turn off their views. To do this we will have to open the control panel; press the Windows key and type “Control Panel”. Once inside, select the “View by” option and choose “Small Icons”.
After this you have to search for “Folder Options” and access this section. There will open a small window where we will have to go to the “View” tab, then look for the “Drive letters” option and uncheck it. Click on “Apply”, then “OK” and finally return to the Windows Library to see that the letters have been hidden.
The advantage of this method over the other two is that it is possible to do it with all Windows drives at the same time. Now, to show them again, we will explain below what to do.
What to do to re-display drive letters within Windows?
Because using the view options method is the simplest, this is explained below. First of all, you have to access the control panel and place sections of it in “Small Icons.” This can be done from the top right corner in the “View by” option. Once this is done, go to the “Folder Options” section and enter it.
When the small window opens, we just have to go to the “View” tab, and there locate the box that says “Drive letters” and select it. Then click on “Apply” and “OK”. This will cause the letters to reappear immediately. You can see that it is quite easy to remove letters on Windows drives using this tutorial.
